“We’ve seen flavors of this overreaction by the state before,” Rep. Carris Duncan writes. On March 7, 1965, 600 civil rights protesters attempting a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, the state capital, to draw attention to the voting rights issue, encountered state troopers and local police officers, who tear-gassed and beat them during what would become known as “Bloody Sunday.”  Later that year, the Voting Rights Act became law.

Looking beyond generalizations
