Other possible projects include sidewalk replacement on a section of Main Street with State grant funding and wall replacement on Strand Avenue. The town has applied for additional state funding for Strand Avenue. The town is also fairly high on state lists for funding a bridge replacement on Sunset Lake Road.

State projects

• Guilford Street Bridge: Project is well under way and should be complete this summer. Creamery Covered Bridge remains in place for pedestrian traffic.

• Downtown State Paving Project: Lane Construction is the low bidder on this project with a slated completion date of Nov. 5, 2010. Work includes milling off 2 inches and replacing 2 inches of pavement on Canal Street, Main Street, Putney Road between Main and Vermont Avenue, Vernon Road, Bridge Street and Linden Street. The project also includes new traffic lights on Main Street from the 5-way intersection to the High Street intersection. The sidewalks at all intersections and crosswalks will be upgraded to meet the latest accessibility standards on each of the streets that are part of this project.

• Veterans Memorial Bridge: This is the Route 5 bridge over the West River. Work includes removing pavement, install waterproof membrane and resurface. Lane Construction has this project along with other bridges in southern Vermont.

• Brattleboro to Putney Paving Project: Starts in Brattleboro at Vermont Avenue and continues north on Route 5 through the main street of Putney. Pike Industries won the bid for this project. Anticipated completion date is Oct. 15.

The state also has two bridge projects going nearby, one on Interstate 91 to the south of town and a Route 5 bridge over I-91 to the north.

A long section of paving on Route 30 between Newfane and Townshend starts soon, with Lane Construction doing the work.

The I-91 bridge over Williams Street near Exit 2 is currently in the proposal stage of a design-build project to replace this bridge. Construction should be one or two years away.
