VJC Big Band performs with Alexis Cole at Retreat Farm

BRATTLEBORO-The Brattleboro Music Center's popular "Music Under the Stars" summer concert series continues Saturday, July 20, with the Vermont Jazz Center (VJC) Big Band with Alexis Cole.

The VJC Big Band, under the leadership of Musical Director Rob Freeberg, is made up of area professional musicians who come together to enjoy the rewards of playing "invigorating, challenging, and historically significant repertoire," states a news release. They will be joined by New York-based vocalist Cole, who, according to Jazz Times magazine, conveys "an easy sense of swing, strongly reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan."

Cole has performed at celebrated venues including The Carlyle, Carnegie Hall, Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Blue Note. She has also sung as a soloist with the Boston Pops and the Detroit Symphony. She has recorded a dozen albums as a leader with such luminaries as pianist Harry Pickens and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli.

Music Under the Stars series sponsors include Guilford Sound and other generous donors, and is also supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Vermont Arts Council.

Admission is free with donations welcome. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. at Retreat Farm, with the concert at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to bring lawn chairs and a picnic dinner. Please note that no outside alcohol is permitted, but beer, wine, and cider are available for purchase on site.
