BRATTLEBORO-Landowners can learn how to plan for the future of the forests by joining Vermont Coverts for a Passing Lands Pop-up at the Brooks Memorial Library on Wednesday, May 7, with one session from 3 to 5 p.m. and another from 5:30 to 7:30.
Event organizers say nearly 80% of Vermont's forests are privately owned. The average parcel size has been decreasing, while the average age of woodland owners, now 65, has been rising. Many of these landowners do not have a plan for the transition of the forested parcels to their next owners, and forested parcels are especially vulnerable to division and development during transitions between generations.
Topics for discussion will include questions for lawyers; how to set up a trust; Current Use; creating a flexible, adjustable plan; and how to ensure a parcel remains intact even if there are no heirs.
Participants will circulate among experts who can be involved in land transfers including a lawyer, financial planner, land trust representative, and others.
These brief meetings help identify next steps in planning for the future of woodlands.
Space for the Pop-up session is limited. Register for either session by contacting Laura Farrell at [email protected], or visit their website at vtcoverts.org.
