May Day rally in downtown Brattleboro

Protests, rallies shape up in state as part of call for nationwide protest

BRATTLEBORO-For many years, Brattleboro has celebrated May 1 - International Workers Day, in much of the world - with a rally on the Town Common.

This year, organizers said that the annual May Day event will be part of a nationwide protest against they call the "increasingly destructive actions by the current Washington, D.C. administration."

It will begin with a rally on the lawn of Centre Congregational Church at 5 p.m., followed by a march through downtown that will end at the Common with speakers.

The event is co-hosted by Brattleboro Area Action, Indivisible Brattleboro, and 50501VT, which has organized other rallies and events over the past few months.

"Brattleboro area residents will again exercise their right of free speech as laborers, parents, community members, students, and families, coming together to raise their voices for better, safer, stronger communities across Vermont and around the country," organizers wrote in a news release.

Organizers said they hope the May Day event will "reinforce that embrace of Constitutional rights regardless of race, gender, zip code, or immigration status and focus on the needs of working families, neighborhood public schools, affordable housing, and access to high-quality health care."

According to the Mobilize.us, Third Act, and 50501 Vermont websites, other visibility events in Windham County are also planned in Wilmington from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 100, and in Londonderry from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 11 and Route 100 North.

A number of other May Day actions in Vermont are planned, including ones in Barton, Barre Town, Bennington, Brandon, Bristol, Burlington, Chester, Essex Junction, Morristown, Middlebury, Montpelier, Newport, St. Johnsbury, Rutland, South Burlington, Williston, Wolcott, and Woodstock.
