'Hands Off Our Mother' gathering in Brattleboro

BRATTLEBORO - On Saturday, May 10, the day before Mother's Day, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., area residents are invited to gather at the Common as community-building organizations bring together neighbors in honor of Mother Earth.

Organizers said in a news release that "area engagement grows around the devastation imposed on Americans and the environment by the current administration," and that the most recent rallies and marches in Brattleboro, which have attracted from 500 to 1,500 people, "demonstrated the continuing need for people to connect and talk about steps forward."

Indivisible Brattleboro and Brattleboro Area Action are co-hosting this event. All are invited to bring their ideas, lunch, and lawn chairs. Live music will be provided by local artists and food trucks will be on site. For more information, email [email protected].

Kids get creative Saturday mornings at RFPL

BELLOWS FALLS - Young makers, builders, and crafters are invited to join Curious Crafters, what organizers are calling a "fun and educational Saturday morning drop-in kids crafting program" at the Rockingham Free Public Library. They say it will be filled with free, hands-on, STEM-inspired projects designed especially for kids ages 4 and up.

Beginning Saturday, May 10, the weekly drop-in program will run every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering a rotating schedule of exciting craft activities that combine creativity with science, technology, engineering, and math concepts.

No two Saturdays will be the same, the organizers say, and kids are encouraged to explore, experiment, "and most importantly, have fun."

No registration required. Simply drop in anytime during program hours. Whether a child stays for 20 minutes or the full two hours, they'll walk away with a new creation and knowledge about how the world works. For more information call 802-463-4270, email [email protected], visit rockinghamlibrary.org, or stop by the library at 65 Westminster St.

Share your bear stories at the Halifax Café

WEST HALIFAX - all are invited to share their bear stories of tackled birdfeeders, destroyed beehives, woodland encounters, or compost heap taste-testing at the Halifax Café on Saturday, May 10, from 11 a.m to noon.

Diana Todd will provide information from Vermont Fish & Wildlife and Vermont Coverts on co-existing with bears. She'll tell some stories, including about communities that developed serious bear problems and how they dealt with them. Surprisingly, relocating problematic bears doesn't resolve the issue. Come to the event to find out why.

The Halifax Café is open and serving snacks and lunch from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m on Saturdays in the Halifax Community Hall, 20 Brook Rd., supported by donations and volunteers. Wi-Fi is available on site.

Music at Union Hall in Newfane

NEWFANE - The next Music at Union Hall show will be on Saturday, May 10. Hosted by Newfane Anew, these second Saturday shows are a chance for local musicians to share their music. Donations are encouraged and gratefully accepted. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Three groups will be featured. Ukulele128 began after six years of learning ukulele from Lisa McCormick in Brattleboro. They all loved playing together, so they formed Ukulele 128. They sing in schools, senior centers, and at many musical events.

The Moondogs play original instrumental music that is "upbeat, evocative, sometimes introspective, and always entertaining," they say. The Moondogs are Dante Corsano on fingerstyle guitar, Charlie Laurel on fretless bass, Dave Sullivan on fiddle, and Drew "Washboard Shorty" Kovach on percussion.

Gene Pool consists of Gene Morrison on vocals and dobro, John Pozzi on guitar and vocals, Dave Arnold on mandolin, guitar, and vocals, Jake Geppert on banjo, guitar, mandolin, and vocals and Colin Blazej on stand up bass and vocals. They say they play a mix of original songs and what they like and enjoy as often as possible.

Walks of Wonder with the Grafton Public Library

GRAFTON - Walks of Wonder return for 2025. A Walk of Wonder is an opportunity to explore locations in southern Vermont with other adventurers, hosted by the Grafton Public Library each month, May through October.

The library will organize informal monthly outings to various locations around our area. "Our adventures spark curiosity, as we explore and learn together," organizers said in a news release. These are not guided walks with a lecturer provided, but opportunities for a relaxed outing with others, sharing information and experiences.

All ages are welcome and there is no charge to attend. Individuals do need to register, so they can contact participants with further details for each walk.

Those interested should contact the library to be placed on their mailing list. After registrations, notifications and details for each monthly adventure will be sent via email.

The first Walk will be Sunday, May 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. with a visit to the Allen Brothers/Henwood Hill Marsh. Participants will travel a short distance to downtown Bellows Falls to explore the Riverfront Park Trail along the Connecticut River.
