BRATTLEBORO-I wish so much I had a photo or recording of what I and a few young people walking behind me witnessed on the evening of May 7 at approximately 8 p.m. a few blocks from where we had just exited a talk on nonviolence at the Brooks Memorial Library.
As I was at the front of the small group, assuming the larger audience had lagged behind, I was shocked to see a young white woman, light blond hair, on all fours, on the right side of the sidewalk, and standing over her a bulletproof-jacketed cop in a stiff, aggressive, wide-legged stance, 2 or 3 feet away from her, both arms held straight out, pointing a gun held in both hands straight at her.
I saw another man on the other side of her, but I couldn't make out anything identifiable about him.
The cop, as he continued to make her a target, occasionally looked over his shoulder as if to make sure no one was approaching or, perhaps, filming.
I and about five young people behind me crossed over to the other side of the street.
Being older, it didn't occur to me to whip out my phone and start making a verifiable record of what this was.
So all I can give you is my phone number (917-972-8845) if you'd like to contact me, or if you know what the hell that was.
