Concert and raptor food drive to benefit Fred Homer’s rescue work

SOUTH NEWFANE-The South Newfane Community Association (SNCA) hosts Williamsville-based music duo Bard Owl for a concert and raptor food drive to benefit Fred Homer's raptor rescue work on Saturday, May 24, at 5 p.m. at the historic South Newfane Schoolhouse, 387 Dover Rd.

"Our neighbor, Fred Homer of Williamsville, has been certified to rescue raptors for 40 years - rehabbing hawks with broken wings, feeding fledglings separated from their flocks, and caring for a beautiful blind-in-one-eye barred owl named Stella," said Maia Segura, organizer and president of the SNCA. "Regional and national bird rescuers transfer birds to Fred to carry across the finish line and re-release back into the wild."

Segura said Homer "has been financing his own operations." Due to changes in state regulations, however, "he's paying up to 80 cents per mouse to nourish the birds, and it adds up fast."

Bard Owl (bardowlmusic.com) is Annie Landenberger and T. Breeze Verdant. They describe themselves as "creating a rich, eclectic playlist of evocative originals" as well as old tunes and new, "energetic danceable to mellow," with Verdant on guitar, vocals, and stomp box and Landenberger on vocals and percussion.

For this event, Segura says, "they plan to pull out all their bird songs."

A donation of $10 per person is suggested at the door. All proceeds will be "donated directly to Fred to help support his raptor rescue," says Segura. "This is also a raptor food drive. Please bring your captured, nonpoisoned frozen rodents to the show where we will have a cooler waiting."
