BRATTLEBORO-The AIDS Project of Southern Vermont presents its 38th annual AIDS Walk, taking place on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to noon. This annual tradition will be held at Centre Congregational Church, 193 Main St. All are invited to join for a morning of speakers, music, community celebration, and remembrance.
This year, the event has been officially renamed the Ron & Shirley Squires AIDS Walk, recognizing the enduring legacy and advocacy of the Squires family.
"Ron Squires made history as Vermont's first openly gay legislator, representing the towns of Guilford and Vernon," wrote organizers in a news release. "A tireless advocate, he championed legislation to ban discrimination against gays and lesbians before his untimely death from AIDS-related illness in 1993."
Following Ron's death, his mother, Shirley Squires, became a steadfast supporter of the AIDS Project's mission. "Her dedication has helped keep Ron's memory alive and has supported countless individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS," said organizers.
Midway through the program at Centre Church, attendees will participate in a short community walk to honor loved ones lost and those living with HIV/AIDS. The event serves as both a celebration of the progress made and a call to continue supporting and uplifting those impacted by HIV in southern Vermont.
State and local leaders will be invited to speak, and the program will also feature live music.
The AIDS Project extends its thanks to the volunteers and local businesses who have contributed their time, talent, and resources to this year's walk. To make a donation or learn more, visit aidsprojectsouthernvermont.org/donate.
