Walk for Amber on June 1 to raise funds for memorial scholarship

BRATTLEBORO-The 19th annual Walk for Amber, a fundraising event for the Amber Bernier Scholarship, will be held on Sunday, June 1, at 11 a.m.

Registration begins at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital parking lot at 10:30 a.m. The course is a 5-mile loop beginning and ending at the hospital.

All are invited to join the walk on June 1 and to contribute online at amberbernierscholarship.org (click on Fundraising Events), or on Venmo @walkforamber.

Bernier, the high school senior memorialized with this scholarship fund since 2004, attended the Windham Regional Career Center's business communications technology program and "she was observant," the Scholarship organizing committee said in a news release. "She listened more than she talked. [...] If someone was treated unfairly, she would speak up. And even in stressful times, Amber never lost her passion for fashion and the desire to look her best. So, with Amber in our hearts, our admonition to all: listen more, care about justice, and always, always, look your best."

To date, the committee said, it has given out 60 scholarships "to some amazing graduating high school seniors. Each year, the committee is impressed by how meaningful it is for these graduates to play a role in honoring Amber."

The scholarships go directly to students, not their schools or programs, so funds can be used flexibly for tuition, books, supplies, or whatever else is needed.

Walk organizers would like to thank all those who contribute, which they said is "proof that our community is endlessly caring and generous."
