BRATTLEBORO-Becky Graber is putting together the Good Trouble Street Choir, which will be involved in protesting through song in the "Let Freedom Fly" protest march to the Common on Saturday, June 14.
"Dan DeWalt, of the People's Resistance Marching Band, asked if I would like to join them with some singers and my heart immediately said yes," Graber said in a news release.
Citing a lack of respect for people's rights, due process, and care, she said, "Money, power, and profit, not kindness, seem to be motivating decisions made by those in power. Lives are being turned upside-down without a second thought."
"Many of us are looking for ways to help shift the energy, turn things around," Graber said. "For one thing, Let's sing! It helps us individually, it bonds us, it helps us be heard, and I believe even the literal vibrations make a difference."
The choir will have two evening rehearsals on Thursday, June 5, and Wednesday, June 11, both from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Beloved Community, 18 Town Crier Drive. It used to be First United Methodist Church; now First Baptist Church has joined them.
The choir will then meet at 2:30 p.m., before the actual rally begins at 3 p.m. on June 14 at Centre Congregational Church on Main Street. Other singers are welcome to come to learn the song's most basic parts.
"We'll sing 'Lead with Love' (One Foot in Front of the Other), 'Make Good Trouble,' 'Love Will Guide Us,' and some songs the [Celebration] Brass Band already plays: 'Wade in the Water' (the protest version with lyrics written by Pete Simoneaux); the chorus to 'Get Up, Stand Up'; maybe 'This Land is Your Land,'" Graber said.
