‘Anansi, the Trickster Spider: A West African Folktale’ comes to BMAC on June 15

BRATTLEBORO-Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children's Theater presents an interactive and family-friendly production of "Anansi, the Trickster Spider: A West African Folktale" on Sunday, June 15, at 11:30 a.m., at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center (BMAC).

The performance is presented in connection with Carl E. Hazlewood's exhibition "Infinite Passage."

Children 6 and up are invited to participate in a pre-performance mask-making and drama workshop at the museum and to be part of the show. Advance registration is required for the workshop, which begins at 10 a.m.

Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children's Theater is an award-winning educational theater company based in Connecticut, "renowned for its fantastic masks and captivating costumes and for its innovative interaction with children," organizers wrote in a news release.

The company has been performing in schools, museums, libraries, and festivals throughout the United States since 1980.

The play, written and directed by company Founder and Artistic Director Leslie Elias, tells the story of the beloved and comical character Anansi, the infamous trickster of the Asante People of West Africa.

The tale, "How Anansi Brought the Stories Down," describes how Anansi, with the aid of the children in the audience, tricks the animals of the jungle and retrieves the stolen stories of the world from Nyame, the Sky God.

In the workshop before the performance, Elias will teach children how to play the roles of various jungle animals, and Natalie Resto will lead a mask-making activity.

This event is funded in part by the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies.

Admission for the performance is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 and older, and free for children under 6. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door, subject to availability.

Admission for the workshop plus the performance is $15. Space for the workshop is limited. To register, visit brattleboromuseum.org or call 802-257-0124, ext. 101.
