Music at Union Hall series continues on June 14

NEWFANE-Come see Newfane Anew's next Music at Union Hall concert on Saturday, June 14, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on the town common. In case of rain, the show will be at Union Hall.

This month's performers are the Demolition String Band, The Cucumbers, and Bard Owl. Band duos Elena Skye and Boo Reiners, Jon Fried and Deena Shoshkes, T. Breeze Verdant and Annie Landenberger - all seasoned performers and creators - are coming together to swap songs, styles, and rhythms for an early summer evening of music for all.

Performing country, roots rock, bluegrass, and mountain music, singer-songwriter Skye and multi-instrumentalist Reiners front Demolition String Band. Having released several albums, they've played clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Europe.

With a collection of original songs and covers, Demolition String Band "can rock the dance floor playing and singing old-school style around a single microphone, juggling banjo, mandolin, and guitars, and topped off with their taut harmony vocals," said organizers in a news release.

Fried and Shoshkes started The Cucumbers and found a home in the 1980s indie pop scene in Hoboken, New Jersey. They say their songs have been recorded by Jackson Browne, Dar Williams, and Marshall Crenshaw and have been featured in films and on network TV.

Landenberger of Bard Owl says at age 6 she memorized an entire double album of Mitch Miller favorites to sing for her parents' dinner guests, and Verdant says he was the boy who lay in bed belting out Elvis, Little Richard, and military tunes at the top of his lungs.

The two have merged to create a playlist of originals as well as old tunes and new, with Verdant on guitar, vocals, and stomp box and Landenberger on vocals and percussion. They perform regionally from Grafton to Guilford; in New York state, they perform with fiddler Steve Iachetta as Shelving Rock.

These second Saturday shows are a chance for local musicians to share their music. Donations are encouraged and gratefully accepted. For information on this and future shows, visit musicatunionhall.com.
