Rood artwork on exhibit at Dummerston Historical Society

DUMMERSTON-All are invited to the opening reception of "Watercolors by Linda Rood" at the Dummerston Historical Society from 1 to 3 p.m. July 6.

At 1:30 p.m., Rood will share her painting history, her philosophy that it is never too late to learn, and respond to questions from attendees.

When Rood retired from teaching English at Leland & Gray Union High School 12 years ago, her hope was that she would be able to use her time to do things that she had never had time to do. She began to take classes in the Cheshire Academy for Lifelong Learning (CALL) program at Keene State College (N.H.), which soon offered classes in watercolor painting.

She thought, "That sounds like fun," and said she "was immediately delighted by the way the paper, the water, and the paints worked together and I was hooked." Rood has continued to take painting and drawing classes whenever she can, and has found a community of fellow watercolorists who share her enthusiasm.

"It has been deeply satisfying to see my own progress and improvement, to always discover new techniques, and to enjoy the meditative absorption that painting brings me," she said.

Also new to the Historical Society is "Maps and Stone Walls of Dummerston," an exhibit curated by John Pinkney and which will be the basis of a program by John and David Greenewalt at 7 p.m. July 17, at the Historical Society. This interactive exhibit will invite visitors to update the maps with stone walls on their property and the date of the construction of their home.

Dummerston Historical Society, in Dummerston Center, is accessible and programs are free. Donations are always welcome. Open hours are the first and third Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. Special hours are always available by arrangement with a board member. For more information, call 802-380-7525.
