Beethoven’s ‘Choral Fantasy’ concludes Marlboro Music’s final concert weekend

MARLBORO-Marlboro Music's 2025 summer season concludes this weekend with the traditional Beethoven Choral Fantasy among 11 chamber music masterworks; rarely-heard, large-ensemble pieces; and contemporary music by two recent Marlboro composers in residence.

In a news release, event promoters wrote that, with its community spirit and multitude of voices, the Sunday, August 17, performance of the Choral Fantasy, with co-Artistic Director Jonathan Biss at the piano, "will epitomize Marlboro's idealistic, collaborative approach to music making."

Throughout the weekend, audiences will also hear Beethoven's last masterpiece, the String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 130, with "Grosse Fugue," Op. 133; vocal chamber music by Schumann, Hindemith, and Schoenberg; Bohuslav Martinů's "Nonet"; Marlboro Music co-Founder Adolf Busch's Divertimento for 13 solo instruments, Op. 30; 2017 resident composer Brett Dean's third string quartet; 2022 resident composer George Benjamin's "Viola, Viola"; and more.

All the ensembles at Marlboro include emerging artists and renowned senior musicians, among them, New York Philharmonic Principal Clarinet Anthony McGill, Minnesota Orchestra Principal Oboe Nathan Hughes, and Mahler Chamber Orchestra Principal Horn José Vicente Castelló. String players include violinists Alex Redington, formerly of the Doric Quartet Carmit Zori, and Kim Kashkashian; violists Minnesota Orchestra's first chair Rebecca Albers, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra's first chair Maiya Papach; cellists Marie Bitlloch of the Elias Quartet, Judith Serkin, and Peter Stumpf; and pianists Lydia Brown and Anna Polonsky.

Some tickets remain for Friday and Saturday's concerts and may be purchased at marlboromusic.org or by calling the Marlboro box office at 802-258-9331. Sunday's performance is sold out; a waiting list is maintained for returned tickets.

Audiences are also invited to enjoy free open rehearsals throughout the week in Persons Auditorium. Rehearsal schedules are announced at the beginning of each week and include many of the works that will be performed on the following weekend's concert programs.

Admission to the rehearsals is free, and no tickets or advance signup is needed.

Audience members may contact the Marlboro reception desk for more information: 802-254-2394 or [email protected].
