River Singers prepare for fall session

WESTMINSTER WEST-The River Singers Community Choir, led by Mary Cay Brass, will start their fall session on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Congregational Church of Westminster West. The choir, in their 35th year, is a multi-generational community choir dedicated to singing an eclectic mix of "soulful, thrilling" music from many lands.

This season's music will present songs of joy, love, and peace from many Eastern European countries - Croatia, Macedonia, and Belarus - as well as a Yiddish song about brother- and sisterhood and an Islamic prayer from Bosnia.

Andy Davis, choir member and former singer with Nowell Sing We Clear, will lead a set of lively songs from the English wassailing tradition.

The River Singers has a longtime, deep tradition of presenting vocal visions of social justice. This session, the focus is on an Appalachian gospel song, "I Believe in Being Ready!"; a South African Freedom song, "Honono"; and a new composition by New York-based singer Batya Levine called "We Rise."

The cost for a 12-week session is $145. Those interested in joining should contact Brass at [email protected] and marycaybrass.com.
