Walk for Amber set for June 2

BRATTLEBORO-The Walk for Amber organizing committee announces the 18th annual Walk for Amber on Sunday, June 2. Registration begins at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital parking lot at 10 a.m. Participants are offered a chance to contribute to the fundraiser. The raffle drawing takes place at 10:30 a.m., and the walk begins at 11 a.m.

The course is a 5-mile loop, beginning and ending at the hospital. Over the years, hundreds of walkers have participated and many more have supported the scholarship by purchasing raffle tickets and attending other fundraising events.

The Walk for Amber Raffle features a prize list with six prize options, including a half gallon of maple syrup, an overnight stay at the Grafton Inn, a handmade braided rug, $25 cash, $50 in Vermont Lottery scratch tickets, and 3 pairs of artisan earrings. To see pictures of the prizes, go to amberbernierscholarship.org and click Fundraising Events. Purchase raffle tickets for $1 each, or six for $5, on Venmo, @walkforamber. Put the number of the prize(s) selected in the comments.

The Amber Bernier Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 in memory of Brattleboro Union High School senior Amber Bernier, who attended the Windham Regional Career Center's business communications technology program and was an active member of the Future Business Leaders of America (formerly DECA). She is remembered for her thoughtfulness, beauty, unique style, kindness, and commitment to her friends and family.

Organizers say the scholarship money "goes directly to the student, not the school or program, so it can be used flexibly for tuition, books, supplies, whatever is needed. If the money gets spent on a new outfit, we know that Amber would be particularly pleased. She loved her clothes."

To date, 57 scholarships have been given to graduating high school seniors. "Each year, the committee is impressed by how meaningful it is for these motivated young women to play a role in honoring Amber," organizers said, and they thanked "all those who have contributed to the raffle, proof that the people and businesses in our community are caring and generous."
